Last week I was asked to shoot some behind the scenes photos for Air New Zealand on a film project they were shooting. Over the winter months in New Zealand they have been releasing short films about how good the skiing is here, with the campaign being called ‘Meanwhile in New Zealand…’ with the aim of getting Austrailians over the ditch to ski and snowboard our fantastic mountains. This film was shot at Treble Cone in Wanaka and was released this week. It is such a clever take on two of New Zealand’s favourite sports, skiing and rugby! The film was shot by the team at Diaries Down Under and drone footage by Heli Optics at Colab Creative.
Meanwhile in New Zealand…
It was so fun to shoot behind the scenes photos on this shoot. As with most commercial shoots we were up at sparrows fart to start the long days shooting.
As I had a bit of time while they set up the shoot, I went for a quick hike up the summit slopes at Treble Cone, and as it had just snowed it was looking so very good! I had my camera gear so took some skiing and snowboarding shots of the crew getting amongst the white stuff. Many people had the same idea as me so it was quite a jolly of people making their way up for fresh tracks!
After a quick lap up the summit slopes I was able to sort out a good spot to shoot the skiing rugby ball scoring a try. With careful planning and practice, skier Harry Petit from Queenstown was able to do a backflip over the jump, and goal, all while dressed in a rugby ball costume!! It wasn’t easy and took a few attempts!
Since this shoot I have been busy shooting for Atomic Skis, as its that time of year where they come over from Austria to shoot their catalogue for next years range. I was commissioned to shoot the female line so it was great fun to shoot with an all girl team! Next week Im heading to Mt Cook area with Adventure Consultants to shoot with Nat Segal, while learning by doing a back country ski mountaineering course! Im hoping to learn too as I need to up my skills in that department!
